Potr Plant Pot

What is it?

Potr is a company that makes origami plant pots from recycled plastic. The product comes flat packed and you fold it to put it together yourself. This result in fewer carbon emissions by up to 90% resulting from transport than traditional plant pots.

The Potr pot is made from old fishing net and is a design inspired by Japanese origami.

I first interacted with this product at the London Design Fair and now have 2 in my flat.

Why is it good design?

I believe this plant pot is good design as it incorporates sustainability with aesthetics. The idea of a plant pot isn’t new, not even a self watering one but one that comes flat packed is.

The plant pot once it arrives is easily assembled by folding in the right creases marked on the pot, with a rope fed through holes to allow it to hold its shape. Where to crease is highlighted on the pot both with the plastic being thinner on the fold line and a lack of colour directly on the fold line. The assembly is both explained on the packaging and intuitive for the user if they have an understanding of the product. The plant pot can also be easily disassembled by removing the rope which results in you being able to flat pack it away when you need to upgrade the size of your plant pot.

The pot comes with a stand to place the nursery pot on so the plant doesn’t sit in water can can drain properly to prevent the disease. This also allows for a water reservoir needed to make it a self watering plant pot. The Potr pot comes with a wicking cord which allows for one side to sit in the soil and the other in the water so the plant is water through capillary action.

Being plastic the Potr pot is cleaned, with just a cloth needed to clear the dust from the pot. The recycled plastic used is also durable and flexible making sure the plant pot will not break if knocked over and that it will last.

This design is attractive, the main aim for any decorative plant pot. The bright colours and origami like design lend themselves well to nearly any space. The design is well thought through and comes with everything you need to ensure it works.
